LAPOA NEWSLETTERS

Winter 2016

Judy Nichols, our Association Secretary and year-round resident, reported the lake froze over on January 13th, as confirmed by the first appearance of an ice shanty that morning. Summer seems a long way away mid-way through the winter, but we’ll get there, God willing and the creeks don’t rise!

Here is a short report on the activities of the Aquatic Invasive Species Committee of the Association, established last summer to look into its obvious subject, and chaired by John O’Farrell. Discouraging news first: the Hillman Township Board rejected our draft ordinance designed to require washing of boats and trailers at the public landing. Their reason was that the ordinance would be too difficult and expensive to implement and enforce. The committee is considering other options, and continuing its investigation of various kinds of boat washes.

Fall 2015
The summer is rapidly winding down - the evidence is the removal of docks and boats, and the closing of vacation homes around the lake. It was a great summer, and a busy one for your Association. Because of a growing concern about aquatic invasive species, your Board, at its July meeting, created a new committee to investigate, evaluate and report. Messrs. O’Farrell and Mahoney, Board members, were appointed co-chairmen, and they have subsequently recruited several additional volunteers to help them. (If anyone wants to join their efforts, contact John or Ed directly.) This Aquatic Invasive Species Committee presented a proposal to the Board that the Association initiate efforts in three areas: a township ordinance requiring a boat wash at the public landing, a study of what a boat wash would entail, and a public education effort on the subject generally. These three goals have been subsequently advanced - principally in the drafting of an ordinance which was submitted to, and discussed with township board members in early September. Discussions with the township will continue, and the Committee will report on progress. The Board thanks the Committee for its efforts.
Winter 2014

The Lake froze over Dec. 15, a bit earlier than usual. And true to form, within 24 hours, fishermen were on the lake. We think that fishing has been down this year, perhaps due to the very bitter cold winds on many days. Birds, deer and the ever-present squirrels are in constant search of food. Lake Patrolman Keith Vandeveer has reported no weather related property damage this season – always good to have a favorable report from Keith!
